Senior Vice President, Finance & Operations; Chief Financial Officer

Position Description

The Senior Vice President, Operations and Chief Financial Officer (“SVP”) is responsible for providing financial and operational, including information technology, leadership in all areas of the organization and assuming a strategic role in the overall fiscal and operational management of the organization. The SVP reports to the President and liaises directly with the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.

Moreover, you excel at explaining the financial narrative to a non-financial audience.

Key Responsibilities

Finance and Administration
  • Interprets the business and economic environment within which WWF-Canada operates.
  • Applied understanding of restricted fund accounting and the impact on operations.
  • Participation in the preparation of multi-year strategic plans along with annual operational and financial planning. The SVP is responsible for integrating financial plans in support of the strategic and operational plans.
  • Leading the preparation of the annual budget and regularly measuring the organization’s performance against that budget.
  • Monitoring and anticipating new developments regarding reporting of non-profit organizations to the Canadian Revenue Agency and any new requirements regarding auditing or accounting practices.
  • Serving as liaison on matters of banking, property and liability insurance, and overseeing the purchasing function at WWF-Canada.
  • Ensuring an appropriate and effective financial and administrative reporting relationship between WWF-Canada and WWF International.
  • Reports monthly on the financial performance of WWF-Canada internally to the President and senior management, and quarterly to the Audit Committee and the Board of Directors.
  • Ensures a strong system of internal controls, that all financial operating rules and systems are effective, and that WWF-Canada’s legal and reporting requirements are regularly reviewed and met.
  • Serves as the principal point of contact with external auditors and the Audit Committee, ensuring high quality, understandable, annual audited statements are prepared for WWF-Canada.
  • Provides overall accountability for the financial activities of the organization and provides leadership by ensuring the ongoing optimization of technology.
  • Bears first-line fiduciary responsibility for WWF-Canada by developing and implementing long and short term plans for effective management of all revenue, cash, capital funds, and reserves.
  • Oversees the property management of the organization, including space planning and utilization, lease negotiation and co-ordination with real estate managers.
  • Ensures WWF-Canada maintains its Imagine Canada certification.
Human Resources
  • Champions the human resources projects to achieve the 5-year strategic goal of being an employer of choice, such as rewards and recognition, robust recruiting, and culture.
  • Supports and values initiatives that promote a safe, fair, and flexible workplace.
Information Technology
  • Oversees the development and execution of an information technology strategy in support of the organization’s overall vision and core purpose. This includes planning, coordination, and execution of all operational initiatives associated with network infrastructure, telecommunications, technical support, hosting, website and disaster recovery provisioning.
  • Champions the ongoing optimization and development of computer-based information and enabling technologies in support of WWF-Canada’s operational and strategic direction.
  • Oversees the development of solutions via technology to create a modern and flexible workplace.
Donor Relations and Services
  • Oversees the development and execution of a donor relations and services strategy that leverages technology where appropriate to drive efficiency, the donor experience, and enable fundraising, marketing, and communications efforts.
  • Oversees the proper and timely receipting of donors (including “in-kind”) per Canada Revenue Agency guidelines.
  • Ensures legal and regulatory requirements, particularly under privacy legislation and Canada Revenue Agency’s regulations on retention of donor information, are met.
Conservation Operations
  • Oversees the development and execution of conservation operations strategy by implementing sound and efficient systems which directly support the administration performed by conservation staff. This includes an efficient contract and grant review process that balances the expectations of funders, requirements under Canada Revenue Agency, and internal needs.
  • Ensures timely reporting of lobbying and political activities to relevant regulatory agencies.
Facilities support
  • Accountable for negotiating and overseeing the leases for all offices across the country.
  • Ensure all offices are properly equipped.
Board and Committee Responsibilities
  • Report the financial and operational results to the board of directors and the audit committee.

What We Are Looking For

  • Professional accounting designation (CA preferred) combined with at least 10 years of financial management experience.
  • Solid hands-on experience and grounding in both financial accounting and financial analytics.
  • Served as the financial and operational executive on a cross-functional management team.
  • Strong track record of bringing about organizational change enabled by improvements in financial and management reporting, optimizing technology and operations.
  • Successful leader of financial and information systems groups – having attracted and developed strong talent base.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining productive relationships with various service providers (technology, lawyers, auditors, landlords, etc.), international offices, and internal staff who may be geographically disbursed.
  • Experience working with telecommuting staff and workplace hoteling.
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizations through difficult financial choices.
  • Deep analytical ability to use metrics and financial analysis to show strategic trends in an organization and ability to lead senior leadership to address strategic opportunities and issues.
  • Experience reporting to committees and boards; ideal if have served on board and committee.
  • For-profit and non-profit experience preferred.
  • Can work at the detailed and strategic level. Leader and coach who is hands-on when needed and has a vision of where the organization is headed.
  • Coaching: responsible for coaching and actively developing staff to achieve professional goals.
  • Change leadership: ability to lead, mentor, and develop staff and help executives in other departments develop their performance management disciplines.
  • Action-oriented: focus on goals and deliverables.
  • Collaborates effectively: can relate effectively to people at all levels and build a team around a common goal.
  • Comfortable in a dynamic, flexible, intellectually charged culture driven by passionate commitment to higher order goals as well as facts and logic.
  • Technology: embraces newer technologies, understands controls and security, experience moving from paper to paperless systems.
  • Human resources: appreciates the complexities of evolving legislative standards and mores.
  • Aligned with the mission of WWF.
