Polar bear, narwhal, walrus

Summer sea ice could disappear from most of the Arctic in a generation. With it will go some of the most critical habitat for these species. Their best hope is tied to a resilient area of ice in the high Arctic regions of Greenland and Canada, an area that needs the right management and protections.

Tagging narwhal in the Arctic

WWF-Canada's species expert, Dr. Peter Ewins, went up to Tremblay Sound in Nunavut, Canada, to help researchers tag narwhal with GPS radio collars.

Polar bear patrols use local knowledge to protect communities

As global warming has shrunk their sea ice habitat, increasing numbers of polar bears have been coming into towns in the Chukotka region, on the far north east coast of Russia. Chukchi hunters worked with WWF to create the Umky, or Polar Bear Patrols, which watch for and intercept bears, averting a more deadly conflict between bears and humans.

Polar bears: A call to action

Geoff York, polar bear programme director for the WWF Global Arctic Programme, explains why things are not as they should be, and that we need to take action.

Polar bear cub in the wild

A polar bear cub plays at the entrance to a snow den, filmed by Peter Ewins and Rhys Gerholdt of WWF when they travelled to Wapusk National Park. The trip, to the world's most concentrated area of maternity dens for polar bears, was made to observe the bears and their cubs as they emerged from the deep snow dens.
