  • Join the Living Planet Community and help WWF-Canada demonstrate to government and business Canadian's desire for strong action on climate change. WWF-Canada's online community is for Canadians who want to make simple but significant changes in their lifestyles that help fight climate change, the greatest threat to polar bear survival.
  • Make a monetary donation to WWF-Canada and demonstrate your commitment to fighting climate change and saving polar bear habitat.
  • Make a symbolic adoption of a WWF-Canada polar bear.

The Partnership: How does climate change effect polar bears?

Polar bears have evolved over time to exploit the limited resources available in the Arctic. The main source of food for polar bears are seals which they capture by waiting beside breathing holes in the ice and ambushing them. As the Arctic gets warmer and sea ice melts, the number of days polar bears are able to hunt seals is decreasing causing many bears to become underweight and less likely to reproduce successfully.

Globally, WWF works with leading companies willing to make meaningful, challenging changes to their operations and support critical sustainability projects. Coca-Cola is one of those companies.

Coca-Cola and WWF-Canada have developed an innovative partnership to promote sustainable living as a way to fight climate change and protect polar bears.

As part of their commitment to help fight climate change, The Coca-Cola Company recently confirmed global greenhouse gas  (GHG) emission reduction targets, qualifying them to become part of WWF's Climate Savers Program. Under this program, Coca Cola will work with WWF to voluntarily reduce their GHG emissions.

Additionally, Coca-Cola in Canada partnered with WWF-Canada to inspire and engage Canadians to live more sustainably. As part of its 2009 holiday advertising campaign, Coca-Cola Canada worked to raise awareness for the need to act quickly on climate change solutions and polar bear conservation. Through this program, Coca-Cola made an additional $200,000 contribution to support WWF-Canada's polar bear conservation efforts and encourage Canadians to get involved with and donate to WWF.

Funding from Coca-Cola is helping to support the following WWF-Canada polar bear conservation efforts:
  • Working with governments, industry, and local communities to implement a rangewide Polar bear Conservation Action Plan;
  • Reducing Climate change, working towards truly sustainable development, and protecting critical habitats including key feeding and denning areas;
  • Addressing threats to polar bears, such as climate change, shipping and offshore drilling for oil and toxic chemicals in the foodchain.
