Director, Mackenzie River Basin

Rob Powell

Rob came to the WWF late in 2006 after many years reviewing the environmental effects of major resource development projects. As director of science and technology with the (Alberta) Natural Resources Conservation Board and through secondments to the Energy and Utilities Board, he provided and managed scientific support for decision makers. More recently, he was appointed to a number of panels including one that had the temerity to turn down a proposed hydro development on the Peace River.

His prior engagements include a stint as an environmental consultant and a variety of technical and research postings. This is Rob's first experience working in the not-for-profit sector, but not his first commitment to worthy causes. He was involved with Amnesty International for many years.

Rob spent as much time as possible on academic pursuits but was finally shown the door with degrees in hand - B.Sc. (Zoology) U.B.C., M.Sc. (Biology) Dalhousie, Ph.D. (Ecology) U.B.C. It is fitting that he now lives with his wife and daughter in the small city of St. Albert, named after the patron saint of students of natural sciences.
