Robert (Bob) Rangeley is a Marine Ecologist with over 20 years of research and conservation experience in Atlantic Canada. His extensive knowledge on all things marine is founded upon a Masters of Science and PhD in Biology, followed by marine-focused post-doctoral research at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews, New Brunswick and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. His field research has focused on the habitat used by seaweed, invertebrates, fish and seabirds in the shore waters of the Bay of Fundy, Gulf of Maine and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
An avid Scuba diver and photographer, Bob has spent many years both under and above the water, leading diving excursions in locations like South West Nova Scotia, Grand Manan, the Bay of Fundy, Gulf of St. Lawrence, British Columbia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bonaire, He has also spent time conducting research on large-scale habitat issues.
Joining WWF-Canada in 2001, first as the Director of WWF’s Northwest Atlantic Ecoregion program, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and now as Vice President, has provided Bob with an outlet for combining his lifelong love of nature and the sea with his interest in marine conservation. Currently, Bob manages a dynamic team that is working on habitat protection and sustainable fisheries designed to recover the ecosystem of the Northwest Atlantic off Canada’s east coast.
Some of the highlights of his work as part of WWF’s marine team includes mapping and protecting marine habitats such as the Gully, an underwater canyon home to cold-water corals and endangered northern bottlenose whales; moving shipping lanes away from endangered whale feeding grounds; and protecting seabirds from illegal bilge oil dumping and working to reduce excessive bycatch in Canadian and high seas fisheries.
