WWF-Canada reacts to Alberta government study on oil sands emissions

July 23, 2009

Keith Stewart, Climate Change Director for WWF-Canada, made the following statement in response to the release by the Alberta Energy Research Institute of two new analyses comparing the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions from oil sands and other sources of crude oil:

“The Alberta government is telling the world that the tar sands produce the dirtiest oil in the world, but this doesn’t look as bad when you realize everyone else is running out of the cleaner stuff. Rather than trying to rationalize pushing dirty oil out into a world that is moving on to electric vehicles powered by green grids, we should be looking for how Canada can join the global effort to create the green jobs that will help us avoid dangerous climate change.”

Everyone is complaining about the "dirty oilsands but no one mentions all the underground coal fires around the world.
