On September 29, 2009, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, WWF-Canada and The Canadian Centre for Policy Ingenuity (CCPI) will host The Fourth Annual Business of Climate Change Conference. This year’s conference will focus on business challenges and opportunities in addressing climate change during times of economic uncertainty, and will feature prominent speakers such as Mr. Jeff Rubin, Hon. George Smitherman and Mr. Craig Alexander.

Climate change is as much a business and economic issue as it is an environmental one. Businesses all over the world are looking to drive growth, establish leadership and transition to a low carbon economy while managing growing regulatory, investor, physical and reputational risks. Unlike previous recessions where the environment was put on the back burner, governments around the globe are forging ahead with green stimulus investments and carbon constraining legislation.

By the end of 2009:
  • The United States Senate will have considered historic cap and trade bill, a bill that has already been passed by the House of Representatives.
  • The UN will have convened 189 countries to strike a new global climate deal to take effect when Kyoto expires in 2012.
  • The Canadian Government will have released domestic regulations.
  • Provinces and states will have moved forward with their own cap and trade regulatory framework under the auspices of the Western Climate Initiative.
  • In jurisdictions around the globe, billions of dollars will have been invested in green stimulus packages to create jobs in energy efficiency and renewable energies.
