Green CommUnity Program

The Green CommUnity Program, generously supported by Loblaw, will help WWF-Canada mobilize Canadians to take simple but meaningful actions toward sustainable living. The program is made up of two initiatives: a series of targeted campaigns, such as Sweater Day, aimed at inspiring Canadians to make changes in their everyday lives, and a granting program that supports schools in taking action on the environment.
Campaigns

We continually work towards inspiring Canadians to make greener choices in their lives. In October 2009, we launched Localicious to encourage Canadians to choose local and sustainable food to reduce their individual footprint on the planet. The campaign included special menus by Canada’s leading chefs as well as recipes, tips and regional food buying guides online. Our first sustainable transportation campaign, Pin it for the Planet, captured the hearts and minds of Canadians as they walked, biked, and found creative, sustainable, car-free ways to get around during the first week of June, 2010. We saved over 4,200,000 kg's of GHGs and inspired Canadians to drive a little less and love the planet a little more. If every Canadian left their car at home just one day a week, we would save about 4.86 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. That would be the equivalent of taking about 800,000 cars off the road for a year and would make a big difference to our planet.

Our cornerstone campaigns are National Sweater Day, the School Granting program, and the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

National Sweater Day
On February 17, 2011, National Sweater Day quickly became one of our biggest and most successful public mobilization campaigns to date. From a group of students sailing to Antarctica, a rainy day in Vancouver and a giant sweater cake in Toronto, Canadians across the country dropped their heat got sweatered. Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
In September 2010, we joined forces with the Vancouver Aquarium to bring the great Canadian shoreline cleanup to shores from coast to coast. This event provides individuals with a is great way to reconnect with nature and have a positive impact in our communities. Last year, over 56,000 Canadians participated in over 1,500 cleanups and collected over 160,914 kg of litter. Learn more about the cleanup.

School Grants

This program will provide $200,000 per year for the next three years to schools across Canada to support environmental awareness and action. The grants will support projects that foster environmental leadership, education and impact reduction, have the potential to be replicated broadly and inspire students and communities to take action.
