National Sweater Day - February 9th

Every February, over a million people across Canada turn down their heat and wear their best sweaters to show support for taking action on climate change. Supported by our friends at Loblaw Companies Ltd through partial proceeds of Loblaw's national Charge-for-Plastic-Bags program (which has reduced the number of plastic bags in stores by 2.5 billion since 2007), National Sweater Day is a fun, cozy way of showing commitment to energy conservation.

In working towards a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2050 worldwide, half of those efforts will come from energy conservation – by way of both simply using less, but also putting to work the efficiency standards, innovations and technologies that already exist and work. In real terms, this means everything from fuel efficiency standards, to building codes, to better public transit, to how we design and upgrade our electrical grid. If every Canadian turned down their heat in the winter, it would be the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road.

More details on National Sweater Day 2013 are coming soon! For now, enjoy this video from 2012’s special campaign ambassadors:

WWF & Loblaw

WWF and Loblaw have a shared vision for a sustainable future. Since 2009, we have worked together to encourage citizens to live more sustainably and take actions that reduce personal footprint. National Sweater Day is made possible in part from partial proceeds of Loblaw’s national charge-for-plastic shopping bag program, which has reduced the number of plastic bags in stores by 2.5 billion since 2007. From driving less to using less heat and choosing sustainably sourced food, collaboratively developed Loblaw and WWF initiatives help support Canadians to see the impact of their actions.
