It's simple! Just collect old mobile phones from your school, family, friends and/or community and you will be helping WWF-Canada's efforts on fighting climate change and making sure that 'e-waste' from mobile phones doesn't end up in landfills.
To help you get started, here are some ideas on how to collect used mobile phones within your school or community:
Get Involved
You can return used mobile phones from all manufacturers to any of our authorized retailers. You can also ship your phone by Canada Post, free of charge. You can also bring the devices to a participating Caisse Desjardins.
What do I do with the mobile phone accessories?
Accessories, batteries and personal digital assistants are also accepted. Please include them with the used mobile phones you are returning.
What will Bell do with the donated phones?
About half of the phones will be refurbished and reused. The remaining phones will be recycled in Canada in compliance with Canadian regulations. Approximately 96 per cent of a mobile phone's weight is recyclable. The only current waste component is the rubber keypad, although ways to recycle it are being explored. Recycled mobile phone components are used to create a number of different items, such as plastic lumber.
Does it really make a difference if I return my phone?
YES! In Canada, e-waste is now the fastest growing segment of solid waste. Bell has collected 625,000 phones since 2003, and diverting 100 metric tons of batteries and accessories from landfill.
Moreover by simply returning your used mobile phone you are contributing $1.00 to WWF-Canada. Your donation will be helping WWF-Canada, the global conservation organization, to help fight climate change.
What happens to the personal information stored on my phone?
WWF-Canada and Bell are both committed to ensuring the privacy of the people who donate their mobile phones. All data is deleted from returned phones.
Doesn’t this program promote more consumption and the purchasing of new mobile phones?
The best way to help the planet is to reduce consumption and waste. WWF-Canada encourages Canadians to look for as many ways as possible to reduce your ecological footprint, including not buying things you don't need and keeping things as long as you can. This program addresses the next two "R's": reuse and recycle. Bell will reuse as much of your old mobile phone as possible while the rest will be properly recycled, thereby reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, which greatly helps our planet.

- Collect old mobile phones from neighbours, family members and friends.
- Set up a booth at school events or community fairs.
- Include a message about the recycling program during school morning announcements.
- Send a student representative into each classroom to explain the recycling program and highlight the issue of climate change and how everyone can help.
- Give out a WWF-Canada temporary tattoo to everyone who donates an old mobile phone.
- Create a 'recycling cart' at school. You can go to each classroom to collect the phones.
- Have a themed dress up day and anyone who donates an old mobile phone can participate. For schools that have uniforms, you could consider a 'dress down' day instead.
- If you hold school plays or events, consider having attendees donate old mobile phones as part of their admission
